The UK authorities has included 11 further nations to its travel advisory register regarding the risks of methanol poisoning from tainted alcoholic drinks.

This expanded warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "an international surge in the frequency of confirmed occurrences" of toxic alcohol contamination.

Just recently, officials had already added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, in response to a number of notable cases like the deadly death of half a dozen tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being warned that even minimal doses of methanol can cause vision loss or death within 12 to 48 hours.

What is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Used?

Toxic alcohol is a harmful substance often employed in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint thinner. It is not designed for human consumption.

Although it is generated during the creation of beverages, commercial firms reduce it to non-dangerous concentrations for ingestion through the distillation process.

Yet in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into spirits to cut costs, and because it is tasteless and odourless, it is extremely challenging to notice.

Official Advice for Tourists

Foreign Office official Hamish Falconer stated that each tourist should recognize the signs of methanol contamination.

"While drinking spirits overseas, stick to well-known venues and refrain from local brews or unspecified beverages," the official said.

"Should anything feels off, like a hangover that's far more intense than typical or sight issues – get medical help right away."

The complete register of nations listed as posing a risk of industrial alcohol toxicity currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
