Premier League Updates: Mejbri Banned for Spitting; City Boss Says 'Defence Has to Get Better'
From the world of English football news, a significant player was given a lengthy suspension, a head coach has pointed out a defender's mistakes to prove a point, and the Manchester City manager has called for backline improvements following a wild victory.
1. Mejbri Handed Four-Match Ban and Fine
The Clarets' midfielder Hannibal Mejbri has been handed a four-game ban and a financial fine following misconduct during October's match against Leeds United. The Football Association confirmed the player faced an independent disciplinary panel after allegations where he spat in the direction of away supporters at the 67-minute point of a 2-0 win for Burnley.
A statement explained: “An independent Regulatory Commission has punished Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri due to his actions in the Premier League game with Leeds on 18 October. The charge was that the player behaved in breach of the rules of football or in an improper manner and/or using offensive and unacceptable behaviour by spitting at or in the direction of Leeds United fans.”
It added, “Mejbri subsequently accepted the allegation, and the Regulatory Commission imposed a four-match ban and £15,000 following a hearing. The panel's written reasons for the sanction are to be released at a later date.” Burnley, now in 19th place in the Premier League table, visit 12th-place Newcastle this Saturday.
Maresca Points to Tosin's Mistakes to Prove a Point
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has argued that not having experience is no a problem at club, pointing out how defender Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not stop the 28-year-old from having a bad game during a 3-1 loss against Leeds United.
The Italian coach, who manages the youngest squad in the division, rejected the idea that inexperience was a factor in the setback. He presented his case by singling out Tosin, Chelsea's most experienced outfield player on the pitch, after he produced a mistake-riddled performance at the back.
“People always talk about experience after we fail to win,” the coach stated. “After we defeated Barcelona, we drew against Arsenal, no one was mentioning older personnel. I understand that if we don’t win, we are constantly searching for the reason why, but in my view the reason why we lost against Leeds is not because of inexperience, it’s because we just weren't at our best.”
He added, “Who is the most senior player on our team in the match? Who was? Did he play any good? So, it isn't related to his age. It’s about those 11 players, they were simply not up to standard.”
Guardiola Says Defensive Solidity 'Must Get Better'
The Manchester City manager has stated the champions have taken lessons from a midweek thriller against Fulham and the episode is now forgotten. The team held on to claim a 5-4 win during a incredible clash at Craven Cottage, having led 5-1 with almost an hour played.
This followed they resisted a comeback to win 3-2 in the prior game, prompting further doubts about if City possess the defensive steel enough to sustain a title challenge to leaders Arsenal. “That game is forgotten,” he commented. “Good learnings, hopefully. At this level, at all the clubs, one must take onboard what happens performances and results and focus on what's next.”
“Naturally I am worried,” Guardiola added. “We are trying to analyse the cause, so as not to allow so many goals. After conceding three scored by Leeds, and five against Fulham it shows our versions, right? Therefore, we have done plenty of positive things. But the number of shots on target had Leeds have? Three? Scored two. That ratio is bad. How many attempts did Fulham ? Five, six? So, the average of chances conceded we can see too high. We must improve.”
Newcastle Prioritise New Livramento and Botman Deals
Newcastle United's recently appointed football chief, Ross Wilson, has made new deal negotiations with important defenders Tino Livramento and Sven Botman the priority on his to-do list at St James’ Park. He arrived from Nottingham Forest in October and was reassured that midfielder Sandro Tonali has a deal that runs until 2029 with an option until 2030.
That has left Wilson free to focus on talks with Livramento and Botman's representatives. With the former’s current deal ending in 2027 and Botman's a year later, Newcastle's efforts are being treated with some urgency.
“The initial three or four days after starting was when I discovered that Sandro’s contract situation is much better than I had thought,” said Wilson. “However, it is well known that the club wishes to renew Tino’s contract and also would want to renew Sven Botman’s as well. These talks are underway.”
Head coach Eddie Howe will be missing Botman for the home game against Burnley this Saturday, and he expected to be out for at least a further period.
Nuno Confirms Paquetá Will Start Against Brighton
The Hammers' head coach Nuno Espírito Santo has stated that Lucas Paquetá is back to the starting lineup when they face Brighton this Sunday, having completed a ban following a red card he received Liverpool.
“It is in the past,” the manager remarked. “I am positive it won't happen again as he personally acknowledged the error. We spoke about it internally. I am positive the matter is closed and will not happen again.”
Nuno also understands the significant pressure on his side, who are 18th ahead of Saturday's matches. “We can't ignore it,” he admitted. “It is the situation. We have to confront it. We are battling for our top-flight status. We cannot hide it.”
6. Arteta Impressed by No 9 Deputy Merino
The Spanish midfielder could continue as Arsenal’s central striker even when the club's usual frontmen return from injury. Merino has been playing as a makeshift No 9 due to fitness issues for Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
Merino found the net for the first goal versus Brentford and set up Bukayo Saka for their second during a 2-0 win that maintained {their|
